At-home chlamydia test
Chlamydia is one of three infections covered by the Visby Women's Sexual Health Test — a self-collected vaginal swab you run in a palm-sized device at home, with a result in about 30 minutes.
Why chlamydia is worth testing for
Chlamydia is one of the most commonly reported bacterial sexually transmitted infections in the United States, and it very often causes no symptoms at all. Untreated, it can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease and fertility problems, which is why screening rather than waiting for symptoms is the standard advice.
Symptoms that lead people to test
- Unusual vaginal discharge or a change in its colour or smell.
- Burning when you urinate.
- Pelvic or lower-abdominal pain, or pain during sex.
- Bleeding between periods or after sex.
- No symptoms at all — which is the most common presentation.
How the at-home test works
- You self-collect a vaginal swab following the instruction card.
- The swab goes into a single-use device that runs the test at home.
- In about 30 minutes you read results for chlamydia, gonorrhea and trichomoniasis.
Who this test is for
The Visby Women's Sexual Health Test is for people with a vagina only, and each device is single use. We currently do not carry an instant at-home chlamydia test for people with a penis — a urine-based test through a clinician is the route for that anatomy, and we would rather say so than sell you the wrong box.
After your result
- Positive: chlamydia is curable with antibiotics. Contact a clinician for treatment, and let recent partners know so they can be tested too.
- Negative: if you tested very soon after a possible exposure, or symptoms persist, retest or see a clinician.
- Invalid: the device did not run and the result cannot be interpreted.
Important limitations
- A self-test is a screening tool, not a diagnosis, and it does not replace a clinical exam.
- It does not test for HIV or syphilis.
- It does not detect infection at the throat or rectum.
