Syphilis symptoms
Syphilis symptoms are notorious for coming and going, which makes people assume the problem resolved. The infection does not resolve on its own.

Primary stage
A firm, round, usually painless sore appears where the bacteria entered — genitals, anus, rectum, lips or mouth. It heals by itself in a few weeks whether or not you are treated, so healing tells you nothing about whether the infection is gone.
Secondary stage
- A rash that is often rough and reddish-brown, classically on the palms and soles.
- Sores in the mouth, vagina or anus.
- Fever, swollen lymph nodes, sore throat, patchy hair loss, headaches, fatigue.
When to stop waiting
Any new painless genital, anal or oral sore, or an unexplained rash on the palms or soles, is a reason to test and to speak with a clinician. Severe symptoms — vision changes, neurological symptoms, high fever — need care now, not a self-test.

- Usually not. The primary chancre is typically painless, which is one reason it goes unnoticed.
- If the sore healed, am I cured?
- No. The sore heals on its own while the infection continues to progress. Only antibiotics cure syphilis.
