What is trichomoniasis?
Trichomoniasis is caused by Trichomonas vaginalis, a protozoan parasite. The CDC describes it as one of the most common curable sexually transmitted infections, and notes that most infected people have no symptoms.

Where it lives
In people with a vagina the parasite most commonly infects the vulva, vagina, cervix and urethra. In people with a penis it most commonly infects the urethra. It does not infect the mouth or anus in the way bacterial STIs can.
Why it is worth finding
- It is easily passed between partners while nobody has symptoms.
- It is associated with adverse outcomes in pregnancy.
- It can increase susceptibility to other sexually transmitted infections.
Treatment
Trichomoniasis is cured with prescription medication. Partners are usually treated at the same time, because otherwise reinfection is likely.
